Whether you are a senior in high school picking out a college or already an underclassman at a university and looking to transfer, you still want to be aware of the advantages and disadvantages of your size school. I went to a state university that had over 46,000 students, but I’ve had friends who attend small private schools with 5,000 students. I’m going to take the next few paragraphs to list some of the pros and cons. This is all based on my opinions and my personal experiences at a big time university. My assessment of small private schools might be off because I have never personally attended one.

Right off the bat when you think of a big university (Texas, Ohio State, University of Florida) you think sports. One of the major advantages of going to a large university is their athletic programs. If you are a sports fan, then attending a Division I football school might factor into your decision. Televised games, pep rallies, homecoming parades, and rivalries are all part of attending a large university. However, you do not have to love sports to go to a D-I school. There are thousands of students at large universities that want nothing to do with sports, and that’s ok because there are plenty of other things to do.

Large schools also come with large libraries and media centers. There are plenty of places to study and plenty of computer labs to get your work done during class. I used to go to a computer lab (there were hundreds of computers in there) in between my classes and surf the web or complete my homework from the night before. At a small school there may only be one library and it might be too far out of your way. At a big school, there’s a library, study hall, or computer lab on every corner.

Food is another advantage of attending a large university. They have several dining halls and not to mention Dunkin’ Donuts, Starbucks, Chik-Fil-A, Taco Bell, Pizza hut, and basically every other fast food joint you can think of right in the middle of campus. You can get food anywhere. And the dining halls actually have eatable food. They don’t serve Helda’s three day old meatloaf and peas. We had freshly baked omelets with bacon and pancakes every morning. I bet you can’t get that at Flagler College.

Some other quick advantages of a large university are the social aspects (fraternities and sororities, intramurals, clubs, student government, and so on). Most universities have a distinguished faculty that know what they are doing. Another advantage is there is on-campus housing for freshman (and sometimes sophomores). This gives you to opportunity to wake up 10 minutes before class starts and walk there in your PJs.

Some disadvantages of a large school are the enormous sized classes. It’s likely you can have a class with 900 people. No matter what you say or how many questions you ask in class, the professor won’t know your name. Many classes are taught by Teacher’s Assistants, which means you are not getting as high a quality as you would like. At a large university you are just a number to some people, and you can get lost in the crowd. Finally, all professors think they are hot shots and care more about their own research than helping students.

Small universities on the other hand have smaller classes. These smaller classes may put more emphasis on learning and hands-on experience. I have never attending a small university but most likely they have more individualized majors. It is not a set curriculum that thousands of people follow every semester. With smaller classes students are able to get to know their professors better. This is great from when its time to find letters of recommendation. Try getting a letter from a teacher when you were just one of 900 students in the class.

Another pro for attending a small college is the advisors know the students very well. Try seeing an advisor at the college of liberal arts at a major university. They see a hundred kids a day and won’t ever remember your name or what classes you’re taking. Also, there is a greater sense of community at a small school. You aren’t just a number on an ID card, here you are a person with a face and a name.

Top Psychology Graduate Schools – University of Illinois – Urbana-Champaign

If you are looking to be matriculated into one of the nation’s best graduate schools in psychology, then make sure that you add the University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign to the top of your application stack. Currently, Illinois holds the #7 ranking for top psychology graduate programs according to U.S. News and World Reports. At Urbana-Campaign, doctoral programs are offered in the following areas of research:

* Biological* Brain and Cognition* Clinical/Community Psychology* Cognitive Psychology* Developmental Psychology* Quantitative Psychology* Social-Personality Psychology* Industrial-Organizational Psychology* Visual Cognition and Human Performance

As an added plus, there are also interdisciplinary training programs in Psycholinguistics and Human Factors Psychology.

In order to be considered for acceptance to this school, a student must fill out the Institutional application as well as the Department of Psychology Information Form. Expect the Departmental form to repeat a lot of the same questions as the Institutional application, but it delves deeper into your educational background and future goals. Admissions committees will use these responses to determine whether or not you are a good candidate for doctoral study. They must also have two letters of recommendation, graduate admissions essay, fully complete, sealed transcripts, and a GPA that puts you at the top of your class. Like most other research-oriented Ph.D. programs, it will be a plus to have prior research experience to discuss within your personal statement. As with most other graduate programs, you can expect to submit almost all of your materials online.

While Urbana-Champaign offers a wide variety of areas of specialization, you can also expect that as a top graduate program, the competition may be fierce to get in. It pays off in the form of an acceptance letter to study hard for the GRE exam, identify potential faculty mentors, and write an effective statement of purpose. Once all of these factors are in place, you can rest assured that your application package is among the top of the applicant pool.

William Woods University is located in Fulton, Missouri and is a four year private nonprofit university that offers students the choice of pursuing an associate degree, bachelor’s degree, or a master’s degree. William Woods University has many different and exciting equine degree options that students can choose to pursue.

Students who attend William Woods University can choose to major in one of two available equestrian programs. The first is the Equestrian Science Degree. This is a four year program that will earn the students who successfully complete it a baccalaureate degree. This program was designed for students who are interested in pursuing a career that involves training horses, teaching equitation, or managing horses. Students who participate in this program will receive both theoretical class work and hands on experiences. Some of the theoretical courses that students will be required to complete include equine anatomy, equine nutrition, teaching methods, horse evaluation and selection, and stable management.

Students will also select a concentration in one of the four different riding disciplines that are offered at William Woods University. Students can choose to focus on Dressage, Hunter/Jumper, Saddle Seat, or Western. Besides their main area of concentration, students will be required to spend one semester riding in two of the other concentrations. Students will also participate in horse show competitions. Though it is not required, students who intend to train or show horses as a profession should compete at the shows so that they will be able to gain the vital experience that they will need to be successful in the future. Students may also choose to minor in Equestrian studies.

The other degree program that is offered at William Woods University is the Equine Administration Degree. The Equine Administration Degree Program is intended for students who want to pursue a career on the business side of the equine industry rather than the training and teaching side. Students will be focusing on areas like business organization, breed associations, facility managers, event managers, and entrepreneurs. Students who enroll in the Equine Administration Degree Program will receive training in both the theoretical and application processes of the equine industry. The applied course work will consist of work that includes learning the techniques that are used by both equine and facility management, show and event management, and a minimum of three semesters of applied riding.

All of the applied riding credits that a student earns will come from a combination of the different riding styles that are taught at the university: Dressage, Hunter/Jumper, Saddle Seat, and Western. Some of the theoretical courses that a student must successful complete are economics, entrepreneurship, promotion and public relations, law, and taxation. Students will also have to choose five additional business and computer classes to complete the curriculum. Students of the Equine Administration Degree Program will have the opportunity to compete in horse shows if they want to do so. Students will be responsible for their own entry fees, stabling, and hauling fees and any other expenses that are accumulated when showing.

William Woods University has a very extensive on-campus equine facility that provides an optimal learning environment for all of the students who use it. Some of the amazing features include:

Michigan State University is a public college located in East Lansing, Michigan. It is a land-grant university and was the first agricultural college in the United States. Michigan State University(MSU) has a fantastic hospitality school and the study abroad program is the largest of any single-campus university in the nation, offering more than 200 programs in more than 60 countries on all continents. Following the introduction of the Morrill Act, “MSU” became co-educational and expanded its curriculum beyond just agriculture. “MSU” is currently listed as the six-largest university by enrollment. As a research university, Michigan State University is a member of the Association of American Universities.

In 1855, Governor Kinsley S. Bingham signed a bill to establish the nation’s first agriculture college, the Agricultural College of the State of Michigan. Classes began in May of 1857 with three buildings, five faculty members and 63 students. The first designed curriculum was one that required more scientific study than any undergraduate institution of the era, balancing liberal arts, sciene and practical training. After the Reorganization Act of 1861 was passed, Colleges had a four-year curriculum and the power to grant master’s degrees. That same year, the school changed its name to State Agricultural College and its first class graduated. However, there was not much for an elaborate graduation ceremony, most of the alumni were drafted into the American Civil War that followed soon after. The college first admitted women in 1870, although at that time there were no female dormitories. Females, even from the early days, took the same scientific agriculture courses as male students. In 1896, the faculty created a “Women Course” that melded liberal arts and sciences, with a home economics curriculum. That same year, the College turned the old Abbot Hall dorm into a women’s dormitory. However, it was not until 1899 that the State Agricultural College admitted its first African American student. The first African American student, William I. Thompson, went on to teach at what is now Tuskegee University. In September 2005, current university president Lou Anna Simon called for “MSU” to become the global model leader for Land Grant institutions by the year 2012.

The Athletic teams, all 22 of them, are named the Spartans and dress in green and white colors. Michigan State offers 14 varsity sports for men and 15 for women. The men’s basketball team has won the national championship twice, once in 1979 and another in 2000. The 1979 championship team was led by the well-known NBA great, Earvin “Magic” Johnson. Football has a long tradition at Michigan State, starting as a club sport in 1884, but football gained varsity status in 1896. The team won the Rose Bowl in 1954, 1956 and 1988. The basketball games are played at the Jack Breslin Student Events Center and the football games are played at Spartan Stadium, in the center of the campus.

Michigan State University is one of the many fine schools to attend after high school in the United States. The academic program and athletic program of the university meets the requirements to become successful beyond graduation.

Karnataka State Open University was set up in the year 1996 under the KSOU Act, 1996. It was set up with the objective of providing higher education opportunities to the hundred thousand students in the state as well as the country who were not in a position to attend full time courses.

The University has been granted recognition by the UGC Distance Education Council (DEC), Delhi and various other educational associations like Association of Indian Universities, Delhi, Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), London, UK, Asian Association of Open Universities etc.

The seat of the Karnataka State Open University is at Mysore in Karnataka and has a lush state of the art campus complete with all the modern facilities of today. There is library, girls’ hostel, administrative office, guest house, and cafeteria and accommodation facilities for a limited number of people. During orientation programs and term end examinations, students and faculties come here from different parts of the country. Nowadays online examination pattern is being followed by the University.

The various traditional and professional courses provided by the University include B.A/B.Com, B.Ed., M.A./M.Com, M.Ed., MBA, M.Phil and a host of other courses at the undergraduate and graduate level. The course curriculum is designed in such a way so that it conforms to the international academic standards. This makes the students eligible for gaining international exposure through various Master programs or avail job opportunities in MNC and other kinds of organizations.

The KSOU has put in place an online examination pattern for conducting various semester and term end examinations. This means that students can give their exams online and get their results within 15 days. Normally, it takes 2 to 3 months for results to be declared under conventional paper-pen examination system. Very few Open Universities that provide distance learning courses have online examination pattern for the students.

Its latest innovation is the Online Learning Management System that gives the students a chance to learn in virtual classrooms. It has in essence proved its motto of Education, Anytime, Anywhere. Students can get to interact with the faculty and other students via satellite communication systems and solve all their doubts and queries.

There is a Personal Contact Program (PCP) that is held for the students enrolled in Online Distance Learning program of the University. The ODL has opened new avenues of opportunities for students who are not able to join regular University courses due to various socio-economic and career related problems.

There are a lot of options for students who have decided to attend the University of Georgia. Athens, Georgia, is a smaller city than many of the larger hubs, which also means prices on apartments are quite a bit lower than in many other cities of comparable size. This gives incoming students a lot of options if they can’t land an apartment on the actual university campus.

The East Campus Village, only opened in the fall of 2004, is the place for University of Georgia students to find the perfect UGA apartments to suit their needs. The East Campus Village (ECV) is a group of 4 apartment style residence life halls that are wildly popular with students. Over 1,200 university students live in comfort and privacy in those apartment complexes.

The apartments from the ECV are fully furnished, and shared by groups of either two, three, or four students who have their own rooms while sharing a public area. There are kitchenettes that come with cabinets and a microwave, sink, and a full sized fridge (leaving that nice mini-fridge for your bedroom). The rooms come furnished with full sized comfortable beds, a dresser, a study area with a desk and chair, a telephone outlet, high speed Internet service, as well as a cable TV connection.

This gives students looking for University of Georgia apartments a lot of comfort, and a lot of options as to how to set up the room. In addition to this, there are always enough bathrooms to make sure that no more than two residents ever have to share a bathroom. In addition, these new apartments have all the modern amenities and temperature control that you would expect.

Not forgetting that these are college apartments, these apartments also have laundry rooms, study rooms, conference rooms, computer labs, and vending machines. In this way college students can get the best of both worlds from living on campus and having their own apartment.

What is a little bit unusual is how long the rental agreements on ECV apartments are. These apartments are rented on an 11 1/2 month basis. The rent includes all utilities and local phone, as well as high speed internet and cable TV. The University of Georgia gives preference to returning students followed by graduate students, terms in housing, credit hours earned, and then grade point average. All new incoming students are still allowed to apply, but it can be a tall climb.

If you can’t get into these apartments but want your own space, the good news is that apartments are actually really cheap in Athens, Georgia, compared to most cities the same size. It’s not at all hard to find apartments relatively close to the campus for anywhere between $250-$600 a month. There are many reasonable apartments, even two bedrooms, for the $350 a month range. This gives Georgia students a wide array of great options when they’re looking for a University of Georgia apartment.

If you are presently in college or university, don’t even think about quitting! Finish your degree. Even though college life or university life can be tough at times, history has shown that those finishing higher education will get further ahead in life. Granted that there are some people who have become multi-millionaires and big stars without a degree or even graduating from high school, but they are extremely rare. Sure there’s a chance that you may become successful without a degree but why gamble? Don’t you want to increase your overall chances of becoming successful? If so, it helps to have higher education. Being successful and educated just gives you more options out there in life. It opens more doors for you. Also, if it is important for others to respect you as someone who could speak with intelligence, an education will definitely help.

Don’t quit college life or university life to rush into the workforce. If you are going to work for the next 40-50 years, then taking a few years to get through university or college life is not a huge investment of your time. Even in fields that involve many years of studying like medicine, have the faith that it will pay off for you in the future. It is actually investing in yourself. Do your time now for greater potential rewards later. Approach your time in higher education as your full time job for now. If you already quit a number of years ago, it’s never too late to go back and get finish your degree as a mature student, especially through night courses.

It is also important to point out that some employers see those graduating from higher education as individuals who are able to be more committed to a job than those who quit school. Commitment is a quality companies look for in job candidates. Completing higher education is one way to prove that you are capable of commitment professionally. Keep this in mind.

If you are finding college life or university life difficult, get some help as there are usually resources on campus that you can take advantage of to help you. Don’t be shy to ask for help. There are many tips and strategies that can help you get through college life successfully. College and university are not just bigger versions of high schools. There is a transition that is required in order to adjust to college life or university life. There are many people on campus to help you make that adjustment successfully.

It is much easier to finish your degree now than say ten years down the road when you have other demands complicating your life. This is especially the case for those older students who have full time careers and have to allocate all spare time for talking part time courses over several years to finish up a degree. That type of lifestyle is a real grind and if possible, should be avoided by finishing up a degree on a full time basis. Don’t make the mistake of quitting just because things are a bit rough. You will be rewarded if you finish your degree.

Good external guest speakers on campus will often talk about important skills to help you become successful in college life or university life. If you check up on any interesting upcoming talks by visiting speakers, try to attend their sessions.
