University Requirements For Becoming an Occupational Therapist

Occupational therapy is a health profession that assists people with physical or mental impairments to engage in their daily routines. An occupational therapist may work with families and individuals, to encourage activity. This is achieved by modifying the environment, learning or re-learning skills, adjusting the activity, or facilitating mental or physical rehabilitation.

Occupational therapists are accredited at the Masters level through university study. To be admitted to a Master of Occupational Therapy program, the student must hold an accredited Bachelors degree in any subject. However, there are prerequisites that should be fulfilled at the undergraduate level. These vary from school to school, but most require at least a B average at 300 and 400 level courses; three credits in Human Anatomy at the 300 level, with an emphasis on gross musculature; three credits in social sciences; three credits in behavioral sciences. Some also require a course in statistics. Seventy hours of volunteer or work experience with people who have cognitive, physical or emotional disabilities are also required before admission to some graduate programs in Occupational Therapy. Some programs also require courses in physiology, child development, and developmental psychology of adolescents and adults. A prospective student must also display competence in the English language.

The exceptions to these prerequisites is the School of Occupational Therapy at University of Western Ontario, School of Rehabilitative Therapy at Queen’s University, and School of Physical and Occupational Therapy at McGill University which require only the completion of a four-year undergraduate degree with a minimum B average in the last ten full courses.

The School of Rehabilitative Science at McMaster University requires only one course in biologic or life science, and one course in social science or humanities. School of Occupational Therapy at Dalhousie University requires six credits in human physiology, and three credits in human anatomy. The program at McGill incorporates a qualifying year, which ensures that all participants in the program have the same basis for continuing studies at the graduate level.

The Masters programs all cover a core of courses and clinical practicum to prepare the student for work in a variety of settings. These courses cover the theory of occupational therapy, health conditions and occupations, professional practice, human anatomy, assessment and analysis, wellness by design of technology, research methodology, social influences on occupational performance, neuroscience, pharmacology, and applied research.

The Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT) is the body overseeing the certification of Occupational Therapists. Schools offering the program meet the criteria of CAOT for their students. CAOT is affiliated with the World Federation of Occupational Therapists, meaning that graduates who complete a program in Canada meet the criteria to be licensed in countries that recognize the WFOT guidelines. Upon completion of studies, the graduate will be certified by the CAOT after writing the Certification Examination. CAOT also offers continuing education courses to its members.

Each province also has a regulatory body for the practice of Occupational Therapy and provincial associations. Many provincial organizations also offer continuing education for practitioners in their province.

The First Hebrew University in the World – On Mount

The First Hebrew University in the World – On Mount Scopus

Following the ceremony in 1918 at which he laid the cornerstone for the Hebrew University on Mount Scopus, Dr. Chaim Weizmann described the festivities in a letter to his wife Vera. “It was held in a marvelous place,” he wrote ” . . . from which one could see almost the whole of Palestine. There was the Dead Sea and the mountains of Judah, Ephraim and Moab looking as if they were amazed at what was taking place.”

No doubt it was this spectacular view that inspired Weizmann’s choice of Mount Scopus as the venue for a Jewish university in the Land of Israel. Officially inaugurated in 1925, the lovely new campus became off-limits to Israelis during the 1947-1948 War of Independence.

On July 7, 1948, Israel and Jordan signed an agreement that kept Mount Scopus part of the Jewish state but placed it in a demilitarized zone, thus effectively closing down the university. The university reopened only after Jordan was defeated in the Six Day War of 1967, and Jerusalem – divided for 19 years – was reunited.

The idea of a Hebrew University in the Land of Israel was first proposed in the early 1880′s by Professor Hermann Zvi Shapira, a Heidelberg mathematician who also initiated the concept of buying land in Israel for Jewish settlement. He thought the language of instruction should be German and suggested the university be located outside of Jerusalem to prevent objections by religious extremists.

A detailed plan for a school of higher Jewish learning was published by three leading Zionists in 1902. Eleven years later a committee was set up to prepare the groundwork for the university, and the decision was made to establish it in the Holy City.

Before World War 1 drew to a close, negotiations were finalized for the Jewish National Fund to purchase land on the heights of Mount Scopus. Ground was broken for the new university on July 24, 1918; Dr. Weizmann and other dignitaries laid 12 cornerstones, representing the Israelite tribes, on the spot where the amphitheater overlooks the Judean Desert today.

It took another seven years, but on April 1, 1925, in an impressive ceremony held at exactly the same site, the Hebrew University was officially declared open.   Among the dignitaries at the ceremony were British Foreign Secretary Lord Balfour, famous Hebrew author Chaim Nahman Bialik, High Commissioner Herbert Samuel, the Sephardic and Ashkenazi chief rabbis, and Norman Bentwich, scion of a British Zionist family.

One of the most beautiful sights at the university is the historic Roman-style amphitheater, located on the site from which Chaim Weizmann so greatly enjoyed the view in 1918. Built especially for the inauguration ceremony, the amphitheater was partially destroyed during the War of Independence and restored after the Six Day War.

It was here that Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, then Commander in Chief of the Israel Defense Forces, received an honorary doctorate immediately following the Six Day War. Here Leonard Bernstein conducted the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra in a concert celebrating the reunification of the Holy City of Jerusalem.

Queen Mary University of London

With an exception to the other UK Universities offering MBA in UK, the School of Business and Management of the Queen Mary University of London offers Masters in fields like International Financial Management, International Human Resource Management and Employment Relations, Management and Organization and Marketing.
